I noticed you live in South FL.
Have you seen how big they are at Silver Springs?
We canoe there frequently and they range from 3 - 4.5 feet (very scarey looking) and they usually swim in small schools.
SIlver Springs is a protected environment.
Local fisherman drool at the size of the bass and specs but there is a "ABSOLUTELY NO FISHING LAW" there. You can't even get caught with a fishing pole in your boat.

no Ive never been there, heard of it though. 4.5 feet! damn, your sure they're Florida gar?

Oh yes...very sure. It is worth a trip to silver springs and take the glass bottom boat ride. The size of the fish will amaze you along with the 12 foot resident alligator. All fish and reptile are free to come and go. However, the zoo part of silver springs breaks my heart.

where exactly is this place?

Here is a link to their site: http://www.silversprings.com/hours.html
Silver Springs is in Ocala Florida.
I call Ocala the land of the V.L.O.P.S. (Ver Little Old People). So if you drive here you will basically be in the land of retirees. You need to be careful (especially if you ride a motorcycle) as they are mostly impatient (in a hurry even though they are retired), in their own little world (never looking at stop lights to see what color they really are) and never look before turning.
So ignore the old farts and enjoy the rest of Ocala.

It has been too many years since I went to Silver Springs. Guess it's time. Nice catch on those gar.
