I catch blue gill and crappie to put in my tank all the time but rereleasing them isn't an issue. It's a shame I can't go catching exotics here in Charleston, SC.
I tell you what though, pound for pound, bluegill are mean little suckers and can stand their own with the red devils and jags I have owned. They are way more aggressive than any oscar I've owned.
I can't really say I agree or disagree with what you did with the jags, seeing how you did catch them wild and they are already well established in the area. One day I'm going down there for some peacock bass fishing.
What was I suppose to do with them. I certainly wasn't gonna keep them in a 20. They are so common around here that pet stores don't want them. I tried to give them to the LFS, wasn't interested. I will definately not kill them, so I put them right back where I caught them.
I have several wild caught jags on my stocklist for sale including two proven pairs. One pair is currently rearing a HUGE cloud of fry. They came from Florida canals. Beautiful fish, very aggressive and very productive.
how far north can u catch them in florida? my buddy live around the sarasota area but prolly gets to cold up there huh? if not let me know and next time i visit him ill take my pole
It probably doesn't get too cold in Sarasota, I bet they are there. Sarasota is on the west coast and I'm on the east coast but it is only about 150 or so miles north. Take your pole ... and some hotdogs with cheese in the middle.
There are Jags in a lot of the canals down here but not as plentiful as Peacock bass, Oscars and Tilapia...Uros are also more widespread. THere arent any Snakeheads down here ......yet. They are in Broward, a county north, but have been continuesly spotted farther and farther south in Broward waterways....its only a matter of time. In my experience Captive Jags are more aggressive than wilds as they are used to having their own small territory, wheras in the wild they will fend off their area but can just as easily move to a new location. I know of a few spots with a LOT of jags...just ask some of the guys that came down a few months ago...they left with 2-4 pairs and a few hundred fry...in a matter of a couple hours.
If you know how to ship fish, maybe you can sell and ship them to other aquarists around the country.
You make $ and you remove exotic/invasive fish from FL
