Caught These In Lake

just agreeing with you about there not being a time limit on how long the fish is in the tank .

if a fish is in the tank it will pick up the virus straight away and should not be released

There are probably 50 different species of fish in that lake alone, there is no way to know what your going to catch when you cast the line out. Saying that I shouldn't fish because I don't have the aquarium space to keep them is stupid. I simply wanted to show people that these are wild in Florida and I wanted to provide pics because it is a popular aquarium fish. I didn't add them to the lake in the first place, they were already there. I won't kill them to make bigspizz feel better, and no LFS wanted them, so I put them right back where I caught them. The tank was a spare 20 that I filled with lake water and used a brand new filter media in the filter. If there were any virus's or diseases, they already had them.

I agree. If he had put them in a 5 gallon bucket and taken pics from the top, no one would have said anything. But he put them in a clear glass box. Whats the difference, other than a technicality?

What was I suppose to do with them. I certainly wasn't gonna keep them in a 20. They are so common around here that pet stores don't want them. I tried to give them to the LFS, wasn't interested. I will definately not kill them, so I put them right back where I caught them.

I disagree totally with this logic, you don't Release Exotic Fish, it doesn't matter how it came into your possesion.

Any plant or animal that is not native to the United States is considered an exotic species. If you can't keep them a veterinarian or fishery biologist can euthanize it with anesthetic. You can also do this at home by placing the fish in a container of water and putting it into the freezer. Because cold temperature is a natural anesthetic to tropical fishes, this is considered a very humane method of euthanasia.

It is illegal to release any non-native fish or any other non-native organism into the waters of the state,of Florida....

So your saying that I am suppose to keep every fish I catch that is non-native and kill it. I probably catch more Talapia then anything else, if I fish for 2 hours, I will catch at least 10 of them ranging in size from 4" to 10". Talapia are also illegal here. The thought of having to kill (euthanize) a 12" Jaguar Cichlid for no reason other that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time seems unfair. I agree 100% that releasing unwanted aquarium fish is a problem but these fish were already there. Maybe I shouldn't have brought them home and put them in the tank for pics, but I wanted people to see good pictures of them and I used lake water in the tank.

well heres my two cents...

Nice looking fish. Too bad you couldnt keep atleast 1.

it crazy to think how many exotic species of fish you have in your waterways over there... nice sized fish although i do agree with not releasing them after being in a tank...
