This is not quite a cave but provides good cover. I still have to do the concrete on it but this is the stumps and roots in its carved stage.

you could play with Great Stuff foam. They have double and triple expanding types and a new type that stays soft after you are done with it. I don't know what you could use it for, I know they use it for keeping rocks in pond waterfalls secure and I use it to build terraiums.
ive made some super cool caves out of great stuff, only problem ive ran into is its way bouyant

any suggestions for a cave for a 3 ft fish that will one day be more than 5 ft. ? lol, jk great projects guys. Where do you get a large enough piece of styrofoam to carve something like that? I make wood carvings and plaster sculptures all the time, but never thought of styrofoam. I have use floral foam, but again I don't know where you would find a large enough piece to make a cave from.

My tree stump was made with 2 inch foam from Home depot. I just cut a bunch of 2' by 2' squares out of the 2 inch thick foam and then used great stuff to kind of laminate them together to make abig block then I just carved away. As far as a huge cave, I've been commisioned before to carve large structures such as a 10' by 14' by 8' high manger scene for a church from foam with concrete overlay but I think bent chicken wire in the shape of the cave then concrete would work great. Basically the whole void would be filled with concrete and carved to the chicken wire. I've assisted on projects like this before and it works great plus the monster fish would never crash it down since it is very solid.:D
