Not a secret but rather my thoughts are that timing is everything. What I mean is timing on when you pick the fish up.
From a business perspective CB fish are fed and raised to grow quickly to a sellable size, but when they hit the LFS they are typically starved to keep them a smaller size while waiting for sale. If a fish has been kept in this state for an extended period of time I believe that it can stunt there growth rate and potential max size.

A good example, 8 years ago when I picked up my now 21.5" hog CB endi. The LFS had just got in a batch of around 12 CB endi all around 2.5/3". I picked mine up the second day they had them I actually checked out that LFS each week as it was next to where I was working. 8 months later my endi was around 14" while 6 of his batch that hadn't sold were still under 4" mark. I believe this permanently impacts those fish.

My recent endi and the congi twins were shipped to me as soon as the vendor got them.

Moral of the story, try to get new arrivals in the CB game

My thoughts
