Cenote

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The most abundant cichlid in all the cenotes was R octofaciata (all the cichlids in my photos are JDS), next xC uropthalmus, it was only in Escondido where those weren't seen, and I question what I thought to be melanurum in Escondido, may have actually been uros. They were the most skittish.
All the cenotes I visited were fairly brackish, they "tasted" (and I realize I have no test basis for this, just what my tanks taste like when I have treated for ich) at least 3ppt.
Next trip. I plan to go more inland where there may be a larger diversity. I expect to also hopefully find Thorichthys.

Duane, thanks much for the pictures, very cool.

I have always wanted to do a cenote biotope

I have a jack from wetspot that was label Cenote Escondido, he looks different than pet store Jack

Cenotes=therapy for those marathon abused knees.

Well, you never know, I may take Dr. Duane's advice and get some Cenote therapy :)

I just got back from Mexico and unfortunately I didn't get to visit any cenotes :(
The resort I have a timeshare stocks Uros in a man made river. It might be brackish since the river is connected to a natural cenote/river that is connected to the ocean. There must be hundreds of Uros and they are a very beautiful yellow. Some of them must exceed 13".

That's very cool - what is the name of the resort?

Nice pics.
I passed Xcaret number of times but never got in, very interesting, nice colors on that uro.
Seems the brackish water brings that red out, there is a very saline lagoon in Isla Mujeres where they are very bright like the one in your pic.

I went there on my honey moon and that place was awesome, every where you looked it was mayan cichlids and in some parts they were breeding especially when you follow the water out to the park. And the Park is amazing, with alot of wild life land and water species
