Cenote

I went there on my honey moon and that place was awesome, every where you looked it was mayan cichlids and in some parts they were breeding especially when you follow the water out to the park. And the Park is amazing, with alot of wild life land and water species

I saw some pairs too. Did you see some Mayans w/ HITH? Some were really bad, most looked really healthy. They seemed really peaceful w/ each other. I wonder where the Mayans were collected from. I love the colors. These are just as nice as any festae I've seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if the uros simply showed up in the canals there. They are everywhere in the Yucatan from Progresso heading southward, whether fresh, brackish, or in total sea water.
The uros I saw in Cenote Eden all had very frayed fins, but I didn't see HITH (doesn't mean it wasn't there though). Seemed the larger the cichlid, the more the battle scars. The larger JDs in Eden, and Cristalano were also generally torn up, and had battle worn jaws, and lips.
Note the mouth on the JD on the right.

Very true. One brackis canal a saw an uro battling with some sort of fish, but it didn't look like a cichlid or anything in freshwater. It was a very bright blue that looked more like a salt water fish like a wresse that I have seen near the beach. I've heard they have been found in total sea water and same with some amphs.

That is a cool pic. The other fish looks like a robertsoni. Were they both JDs?

They are both JDs in the photo, there was significant color variation among the JDs in even such a small place as Cenote Cristalino.
I have seen it suggested that the Mayans that live in seawater should actually be separated into a different species, trosebeli as opposed to uropthalmus.

They must be, because I believe robertsonis are found in lakes and rivers. Have you've seen any other cichlids in this cenote?
That would be crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised about the Uros. Cichlids originated from the ocean.

The only cichlid species I saw in Cristalino were JDs
Eden had both JDs and uros, although it appeared to me the JDs outnumbered the uros 10 to 1.
In both of these cenotes, it appeared the mollies outnumbered cichlids many hundreds to 1.

I just got back from Mexico and unfortunately I didn't get to visit any cenotes :(
The resort I have a timeshare stocks Uros in a man made river. It might be brackish since the river is connected to a natural cenote/river that is connected to the ocean. There must be hundreds of Uros and they are a very beautiful yellow. Some of them must exceed 13".

so tempting to be visited :jaw-dropp

oya what do you with "uros"? is it exCichlasoma Uropthalmus aka mayan cichlid

Yes, I got lazy and shortened xCichlasoma uropthalmus to uro.
Uropthalmus may be broken down into 9 sub-species.(Barrientos 2003 'The Mayan Cichlid Cichlasoma uropthalmus. An Overview')
And in reference to robertsoni
There are no surface river systems in that part of the Yucatan, whereas robertsoni come from further south in places that don't interconnect such as Lago Izabal or Rio Jutiapa in Mexico, or other systems in Honduras, and Guatemala.

Yup that's what I thought.

There should be t. meeki in the same centotes that you find the JDs and uros. I have an issue of Aquarium Fish that has an article on meeki written by Juan Miguel Artigas Azas. He said that meeki can even be found in some of the super sailleen waters in the Yucatan.
