Chance of existing together?

I think it COULD work. Problem I see with it is the growth rates of the Festae and Chancho's are probably different? I've never kept either one, but I hear the Chancho's are very slow growers. So, the Festae get big quicker, they're like 10 inches and the Chancho's are only 6 inches, they could be at a disadvantage. Festae spawn, now the Chancho's are in real trouble.

But, eventually, I think the Chancho's would be the MUCH meaner fish. I've read posts here about Chancho's have serious aggression issues? Not sure what size tanks that was, but "reagan" ultimately ended up putting his in a pond because they were just psycho.

But, for the size tank you're talking about, just stick a nice divider in the middle of it if things get too sketchy. A pair on one side, another pair on the other side, that'd be fine in a 300 gallon tank.

Well the festae are like 3-4" right now and not breeding yet and no pairing with the chanchos yet. Eventually Some will need to go, just monitoring aggression for the moment.

female festae will produce and lay eggs at that size.

Oh geez, they have zero chance of defending fry at their size, so hopefully they hold off. They are hanging out together sometimes, but no signs of immediate breeding.

All in all....i wouldn't do it

Actually I've decided I'm doing the festae pair and keeping a male chancho, rd, midas, Amarillo, maybe keeping the fh. If the pair gets to be too much I can separate off the female and sell her or trade her in at the lfs. I didn't realize that festae got big and aggressive enough to go toe to toe with a chancho. I've read male chanchos can reach or exceed 16" and they are thick, tall and loaded with teeth (for an amph anyways).

This chancho is ruling a tank with a 14" male umbee and mate, large jags, etc...

The chancho would grow much faster than the Festae that's the thing. Festae are one of the largest cichlids. Males can reach upwards of 18-20" in the wild. And even tho they won't get that big in captivity, they are thick as well and have a lot of sheeerr aggression.

Wow I thought more like 14-16" max... I guess I've just never saw a huge festae. So they are essentially umbee sized?
