changed 210 from sand to bare bottom

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nice. did the same with my 75 exept mine was gravel. besides bare bottom is easyer to cleen:grinno:

Personally, I only like sand for African cichlids.

For BB tanks... If you keep a powerhead pointed at the bottom all the poo, uneaten food and such will enter the water column and eventually get sucked up by a filter. Idk anything about Rays... So idk how they would appreciate that, but it keeps the gunk off the bottom. Its much nicer to only have to change the water, instead of trying to siphon all the gunk out of the sand/gravel.

We put in two "poop suckers"--1" pvc pipe covered in black hose, where the debris tended to eddy and collect. The P suckers are connected to our mechanical filtration (two spa filters run by a Hammerhead pump 5800 gph). Feces and debris scuttle across the floor and are quickly removed from the tank. In the twenty months the tank has been running, there has never been anything to vacuum out. After 18 months, the pacu finally managed to break one of the P suckers by repeatedly ramming it. During the time it took to replace it, we noticed particulate matter in the water. Don't really like the idea of feces and debris being suspended in the water until it is removed through filtration. We didn't realize how extremely efficient the P suckers were until this breakdown. We really love the easy maintenance of our BB tank, and the swift removal of feces is probably the reason for our great water parameters. I'm sure the nitrates would climb much faster if the feces remained in the tank and had to be vacuumed out.

Nice collection.I'm just about to go from BB to a sand bottom in the next week or so.Why did you change your tank?

Just got done looking back at your thread you posted when it had sand. Even though the aquascaping was bland, the tank looked much better with the light colored sand. Now that it is bb it looks too dark.
