Channa Ornatipinnis (Advice on my new fish)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just did the exact thing as you did, exept all my fish is smaller. Got two oscars chasing around two 2-3" channa assam. Mine found a retreat behind the pump though, so I think giving them a fairly large place to hide where the oscar cant go will do the trick. I'm getting a bunch of big leafed plants today for 'em to chill out under

Assams are 'Dwarf' Snakeheads possibly the smallest. They will probably max at 5". Your Oscars will grow to a size where they will be big enough to eat your Assams. Assams are also subtropical.

All these subtropical Snakeheads can survive the tropical temps but are not designed to do so continuously. They are used to a cycle of warm summer and cooler winter. Some are continuously subtropical, This process allows their bodies to slowdown for a period over the year, not hibernate, but along those lines. This could impact on the health of the fish and shorten life expectancy.

Yes you will get away with it but it’s not ideal for the health of the fish.

Sorry if I have come across to harsh, I needed to say it.

I've googled around a bit and for keeping oscars / snakeheads, and it seems the ideal water temp is around C 22, since thats within the range of both fish. I also sold the bichirs and the agressive oscar, so I think it will work with enough plants

Posted up some more pics of the guy...(large load warning)***

And a youtube clip: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xo9fTmd5vvk

He is attracting a lot of attention from the oscars unfortunately, and is getting chased a bit.
I think its due to his dorsal fin being up constantly and the oscars seeing it as a sign of aggresion. The oscars wont hurt him though, but they are following him around a bit much which is making him jumpy!

Seriously, thats a bad combo...very bad...oscars that size and ornatipinnis that size...the picture shows clearly how bad it is...and u saw him chasing the poor lil guy...he cannot adapt in that environment...the oscar will constantly chase him and beat the crap out of him,if u respect ur pet...give him his own space...cheers.

These oscars are gentle puppies... they have been brought up around small fish and for 2 years live lived with 3" keyholes (that could fit sideways down their mouths) and pimelodius pictus cats. They have never eaten other fish before (Though i did have an oscar with them before who killed a CK and two silver aro's... but he's rehomed now)

The oscars are just curious and are in no way showing any signs of aggresion when they approach the Channa... the only difference is that the channa is very jumpy and takes any approach as an attack.

also I think the channa bears a similar resemblance to an oscar (big eyes, mouth etc...) and with its dorsal fin permanently erect it makes it look like an aggressive stance.

when I woke up this morning the novelty of the new fish seems to have worn off and they seem to have left him alone. Ill find out fully now though when i get home from work.

If he is still not getting along well in there, I will move him into my old 55G, but I was planning on selling this setup as its in pieces at the moment.

nice SH mate where did you get it from which shop did they have any redlines. Also has it eaten yet i find it hard to get channas to eat other than aurantis. good luck.

He was feeding well on Hikari Arowana pellets in the shop... ive only had him since yesterday and have been at work the whole day... so we'll see when I get home.. He should definately go for live rivershrimp... (I drop about 60 in a week for the fire-eel).. so we'll see when i get home :)

nice setup and nice fishes dude... well i guess looking at the pictures it does get me a li'l weary... uR oscars sure look like they can fit uR channa into their mouths... the combo honestly doesn't look good in my opinion... but den again their uR fishes if u think they would get along fine... according 2 uRself the oscars are gentle as pups... but den again sometimes we wun know when something happens... otherwise there wouldn't be such a thing as insurance would it...

best thing i guess 2 do right now is 2 keep uR community well fed... juz my 2 cents worth dude... other den tat congrats on uR pick-up and it's a beautiful set-up u got there...

cheers...
