I'd say based on that ray count it could match striata. However both species have subspecies/localities with differences in ray counts as well lol. It's too low to be C. Argus Argus and C Argus warpachowskii is larger with even higher dorsal ray count.
BUT....
There is a sub species of argus though that i've had trouble finding detailed information on and i've been looking for it. Channa argus kimurai , it's description sounds like a natural platinum variation found in china. What i can find on it sounds VERY much like some of the platinums that hit the market this year and i have read reference that there are body shape, jaw/teeth and size differences between them and the other argus SSP's , but i can't find picture references or scale/ray counts for that one seems little is known on it. It could be the animal causing the confusion !
Unfortunately both Argus and Striata are part of larger complexes and we simply do not have detailed studies of the all the MANY localities and unsubscribed species/subspecies.
I counted 49 dorsal soft spines and 25 anal soft spines (my eyes sore...) May be wrong though.
Can someone do the counting based on the above pics to confirm/not my own?
lol, I used the same picture and counted 46, 47 with the small one at the end , (that one thats 1/3 the height tapers it back down at the tail ) I'm going to do it again LOL
