Channa Sp White Pearl Lemon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Let us assume ( could be wrong.....) that it has 46 dorsal spine rays.

Where would that point you guys to? ( such count puts the number of rays between Striata and Argus, being equal to none of them as far as I know )

On the other hand, tail ( more ) and dorsal fin ( less ) has a yellowish tint that I thimk will profgress with time.

Opinions?

I'd say based on that ray count it could match striata. However both species have subspecies/localities with differences in ray counts as well lol. It's too low to be C. Argus Argus and C Argus warpachowskii is larger with even higher dorsal ray count.

BUT....

There is a sub species of argus though that i've had trouble finding detailed information on and i've been looking for it. Channa argus kimurai , it's description sounds like a natural platinum variation found in china. What i can find on it sounds VERY much like some of the platinums that hit the market this year and i have read reference that there are body shape, jaw/teeth and size differences between them and the other argus SSP's , but i can't find picture references or scale/ray counts for that one seems little is known on it. It could be the animal causing the confusion !

Unfortunately both Argus and Striata are part of larger complexes and we simply do not have detailed studies of the all the MANY localities and unsubscribed species/subspecies.

A couple links for reference...

Miguel

It gets more and more complicated...

Striata: "Dorsalsoft rays (total): 38-43; Analsoft rays: 23 - 27".
Argus: "Dorsalsoft rays (total): 49-54; Analsoft rays: 32 - 38"

I counted 49 dorsal soft spines and 25 anal soft spines (my eyes sore...) May be wrong though.
Can someone do the counting based on the above pics to confirm/not my own?

I used this picture

lol, I used the same picture and counted 46, 47 with the small one at the end , (that one thats 1/3 the height tapers it back down at the tail ) I'm going to do it again LOL

.....

Great job, Devon.

Great hint on that other Argus I knew nothing about:)

We are, in fact, in the dark ages, with Channas.

Glaser aquariums has a photo if a so called White Pearl Lemon with orange finnage....that is the only difference i see with the sp Platinnum.

Having said that, i remain clueless as to where to put any one of these two sp....
