Cheap but efficient canister filters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you have nice wood floors - the last thing you want is a potential leak - that is why I don't use ANY canister filters - even just routine maintenance comes with water spillage.

I run both the Rena and SunSun and in comparison, the Rena is much better built all around but moves 187gph when full of media. The SunSun moves twice as much water with twice the space for media, but also consumes more power. SunSun has a UV(although I'm not sure how effective it really is) and Rena has better parts.

Really depends on what your application is. Both are roughly $100......

I was planning on getting this what do u think? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005DHU212/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_2?qid=1378175719&sr=8-2

Not too familiar with that version. This would be the comparable version to mine

Think I should try it? Or go with the cf-300 but I feel the 300 is to low of a gph for my tank and I would need the cf-400 but my mom won't go that high

Well the biggest Cf500 is rated at about 525-530 gph without media. Real world flow is about 350-360gph filled.

You may want to consider the AC110 for your tank. HOB, 500gph and its an absolute workhorse. Usually you can find them for around 80-90 bucks on sale.

Actually I've taken the time with a 5 gallon container and timing the cf500 then doing the math. (loaded with a bunch of bio balls and ceramic media along with filter pads and sponge) It was able to crank out right 450 gallons per hour.

I have the CF500 on a couple of my tanks and love it. I've also used AC110 and loved them as well.

i really want a canister filter, i find it aesthetically pleasing and there is more room than a HOB so more room for biological bacteria to colonize and help clean up my messy bichir, and i have sand and HOB and sand don't mix
