Cheap lights?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 bulbs of the T5's are enough to grow low to med light plants. u gotta remember that with high light. u will be more prone to have algae. if u go high light co2 is a must in my opinion. otherwise ull get crazy algae. if u go co2. u can pretty much use any substrate. but if u go low-tech with no co2. its recommended to use a substrate thats rich in nutrients such as flourite/eco/ada soil etc. if u want to dose ferts. u can do the dry start or the liquid ones from seachem but they are more pricey. and u can dose excel.

and like i said. go over to plantedtank.net forum. and read up on light/substrate/fertz section. there, u have more answer from more knowledgeable answers from planted guru's.

2 bulbs of t5NO is sufficient for low to medium. We're talking about t5HO. Two 39 watt t5HO over 40 gallons puts out enough PAR to grow high light plants but you're going to be struggling with algae if you don't use co2. So far I have successfully avoided this issue using the noon burst method.

Yeah I just wanted to start out with only two t5's for now and when i can get two more, thats when i would also add co2. If the algae gets out of control with two lights, co2 will be sooner
Thanks for the site, i have been checking it out!

I just found these 2 lights for fairly cheap, I'm just waiting for responses on my thread to find whether they'd work for my 20g low-med light planted tank (planned). For the price of the clip on leds you could even get 2 for a larger tank, cheap.

And a hang light for not too much more-
