I'm going to be setting up a 240 Long tank soon and I would like to have a white sand bottom, but I refuse to pay $22 per 20lb bag from Petsmart or any other store trying to rip me off. I heard you can use playground sand, but it takes 2 weeks to settle.

Has anyone ever done this before or have any other ideas?

if you rinse playsand like crazy its ok, or you can use pool filter sand (still needs a rinse, but not near as much)

Pool filter sand is a little more coarse so it doesnt get kicked up as bad. I use it in a few tanks and have had good results.

I used playsand and rinced it a lot. When I added it to the tank the water was cloudy but cleared up over night. JMHO but I think playsand gives a much more natural look then anything else.

ive used playsand with new tanks and not even rinsed it, its clear the next day, if you have fish in there be sure to rinse it or your fish will pay. there is even colored playsand at walmart this year, not sure if its aquarium safe.

go pool filter sand
10 bucks per 50lbs bag and very little rinsing
i have it in my 75 gal it looks awesome

Try a company selling industrial sand for various applications. Locally in Seattle / Renton Washington "Manufactures Minerals" on Monster Road has a huge variety of sand at around $8.00 per 50 pound bag. I got one ton of Monterey Beach sand from them, 40 bags for under $300.00
