A very sketched out, text book vittatus who also appears to be blowing his first set of teeth.

To me, (just an invalid opinion) Water conditions look poor in this instance, which is also safe for me to assume poor acclimation resulting in the absence of color in the tail, but the pigmentation is still there if you look close enough.

Regardless, the give away for me was the combination of jaw shape and the color of the lateral scales from the top down. Which do not change, no matter what the conditions, even death.
 
thanks. right, poor water they loose the rose hue and fin coloration which makes ID'ing that much more challenging. need to study more to undertsand what you mean about the lateral scales.

i want some of what ur smoking... ;) just kiddin. so brevis dont have this trait, which is to say they have less reflective scales?
 
And if you really look at the fish closely you'll even see the spectrum in order
red
orange
yellow
green
blue
indigo
violet
