You don't need to join to see the pics. Click on page 26 and there they are.

I don't really like the tank. It looks like you took someones backyard garden, enclosed it in glass, then filled it with water and put some fish in it. I guess some people like that, but IMHO it would be more impressive if it was a biotope that actually existed. If planted tank people took the approach that reef people do, then it would be much more than an aquatic inverted bonsai.
:screwy: that is one of the most amazing tanks ive ever seen. reef tanks are ugly in comparison to this tank :)

oh and thats Tom Barr's tank. he runs www.barrreport.com once of the smartest guys ive came across when it comes to planted tanks. he's a legend in the planted tank world

I wasn't saying it should be a reef. I was saying that reef people make their tanks like a piece of a reef while most planted tanks tend to be more inverted bonsais than replications of nature aka biotope.

I could be wrong, but I don't think discus even get to be 10"?
I don't know d!ckall about Discus but he's say's in a part of the thread that they're some giant german breed?!

he also says theres 36 that size in there. i count 8. you can kinda tell just by looking at them that they're almost definitely not 10", 10" would be massive!

i agree with pete, planted tanks are almost always too "planted", i would like them more if they were more natural looking.

that looks better than a reef? thats easily the best planted i've ever seen and would prefer to look at a well stocked 55 reef. for me the potential and inevitable diversity of a reef completely trumps even tanks like that. there's only so much you can do with different shades of the same color in my opinion. to each his own i guess.

thanks for sharing.

i dont know about discus either, but gotta keep in mind that the tank is 12x4x4. i can imagine a normal sized discus would look tiny in a 12 foot tank.

as for reefs, theyre boring IMO. some people dont like all the green, i dont like seeing piles of rocks all the pink and purple. but i can appreciate the skill and hard work involved to create a reef or a planted tank. they are both awesome in their own ways.

and yeah, to each his own :)

I 100% could not have said it better myself! Reef tanks are too bright and flashy for me. Freshwater just seems more natural and relaxing..

I agree in regard to reefs, but that wasn't my point. I'm most impressed by the few I've seen that actually look like what occurs in nature. I guess I like a bit more randomness and chaos than what is found in the finely manicured aquatic lawns/gardens.

I have high regard for Tom Barr as well. He's essentially the planted tank god. As is Takashi Amano.

That tank is awesome!
