Check this out, Smugglers Caught

I love these stories when it comes down to what happend to the fish. they normally die in the hands of the fed. B/c the feds think they are doing something good b/c the fish is endangered in the wild they don't let us have them but it's ok for when they catch the "smugglers" they take the fish and let them die. and We all know how not hard it is to keep a fish alive.

That's not always the case. Sea World, San Diego received 3 dozen young asian aros back in the earlier years after the ban. They kept them in back room holding tanks and used them as trade specimens with other research institutions. An east coast case, a couple of years ago, happened where an advanced aquarium keeper (published reputation) was asked to hold seized asian aros for a pending court case. After the case was over, the keeper was offered permission to permanently keep the asian aros with the precursor of never breeding them. He turned the offer down since there was no profit in it.

Any idea why we can't buy farm bred ones? I can see importing wild ones as being illegal if they are still endangered but is there really harm in importing farm bred ones? I don't think they would be more of a threat than a Silver, Black, Lei, African, etc if released.

I am guessing it's just an old law that will never get changed despite how many are farm bred around the world.

It's because the Lacey Act doesn't differentiate between wild-caught and farm bred asian aros. If the Lacey Act (and probably, the Endangered Species Act) were to be rewritten to allow a worded differeniation between the two, then farm-bred aros would be as legal here as they are in the rest of the world. We have examples of endangered animals being protected in the wild while still being legal to keep a captive bred individual. The bobcat is one example.

That first name looks awfully familiar for some reason.

What a huge friggin joke.

Do the authorities have nothing better to do, than prosecute some guy over fish?

There are rapists, drug dealers, child molesters, gangbangers, and murderers running loose in CA. Instead of going after real criminals, they spend their resources pursuing this case.

Glad to know my tax money was well spent, because who knows what could happened if they did not catch his monster.:shakehead

Show me where Fish & Wildlife agents job description states their jobs are to bust rapists, drug dealers, etc. These agents are doing what their job demands and what they were trained for.

And, smugglers, no matter what is smuggled in, are 'real criminals' that skirt the legal process to bring in items through avoiding inspection, quarantine, tariff, and legal documentation such as legitimate importers do by process of good business. By not making these inspections, and subsequent busts, this country would be at risk of a slew of diseases that are causing major suffering to animals and people in other countries where our imports originate.
