I understand both sides. Cause that’s exactly how I got the hybrids in question they was in a tank of convicts and was sold to me as a pure convict. I won’t be returning to said store. Sad part is I got the fish from one of the biggest distributors in this part of Ohio... they just recently opened to the public...
unfortunate, I would personally bring them back and get your money back, and inform them they are not pure convicts, maybe they genuinely did not know.

I can’t really do that cause I got them on a trade I took in some other fish and used store credit to get them so not sure how that would work

I'd just return them for the store credit you spent on them then. Or if you want to keep them, just don't distribute fry and your fine. Nothing wrong with keeping the fish for the enjoyment of the fish themselves.

Because you cant guarantee that everyone you give them to will be as honest as you. With Flowerhorns, people know they are getting some kind of hybrid. A convict/rd, which is bred back to convict and then redistributed, would probably look like a convict that had special coloration, and less honest people would probably sell them as such.

Even if the next owner has no malice or intent to lie about them...How often do we see posts on fish forums along the lines of "ID HELP! I just bought this fish, I can't remember what it is!" And suddenly the red devil/convict hybrid you very clearly told them was a hybrid now is a pure convict and 6 months later they have a school of "pure" convict fry.
