There is nothing in IDing the difference between IT and ST that is 100%. So if you are not going to use tail stripes because it isn't 100% then you can not use number of stripes, the middle bar taper, or even body shape.
I have said it before.... When 95%+ of ST's have 2 bars, and 95%+ IT's have 3 bars then it is a GOOD IDing tool. Oh and I do not believe I have ever seen an IT with a 2 stipe tail, have you? And I am being conservative with those percentages
True, you cannot ID these fish using only 1 trait, but that is true for IDing any fish. You should never use just one trait to try and ID a fish. Especially ones that have other species that look so similar.
