you might be right, but how do you explain the normal looking pumpkinseeds that have no resemblance whatsoever to this fish.

Every fish has minor color and size differences due to age, what it's eating, and the water where it's from.

Younger pumpkinseeds might have vertical bars. Older ones don't. The colors depend on what the fish has been eating and the water quality. There are some fish that are a nice golden color because of the high level of caretenoids in the water (caretonoids are a nutrient that gives carrots it's orange color)

I'll not deny this fish has characteristics that suggest some bluegill BUT ...............

When it comes to ID for guys that don't have the luxury of a DNA lab and a mountain of DNA history from local waters, we have to call a fish what it most resembles. In this case, the fish meets all criteria for pumpkinseed and not a single one for bluegill. At the same time it isn't by any means a typical pumpkinseed.

I doubt you catch pumpkinseed of that size at this time of year that have NO resemblance to pumpkinseed. I suspect you have a large post spawn fish. Do you have comparative photos of a fish that size that looks like a classic pumpkinseed caught in the last week or two?

looks like a pumpkinseed to me.Some have really great red/orange color and Ive caught them up to 12" long

I have some peculiar information regarding the spawning habits of this finish.from what I know pumpkin seeds for the most part don't spawn with bluegills. these fish build their nest right with the bluegill.another interesting factor is when all the bluegills seem to have finished spawning and all the nests are empty. the fishing question are still sitting there.which leads me to believe weather right or wrong that the majority of these fish are sterile hybrids.

because I have a spare 120 gl tank sitting around doing nothing and being laid off for the first time in many years I plan an ice fishing this particular body of water quite frequently.I plan on getting several of these fish and try to breed them. and if I can't breed them I'll get pumpkin seeds of the same size and take many photographs to show there's a clear difference between the pumpkin seeds and these fish. either way I'm looking forward to it.

I have one of those, only in the 1.5" size :D Very nice looking fish
