Yeah he said that they had some options, file bankruptcy, merge, sell a large portion of the company and be watered down to next to nothing, or continue as they are in hopes to get better.
Chrysler is to shut down for a month as of tomorrow. Every plant. Ford says they have enough money to get through 2009, barring an extreme event or situation. Heard those last night. GM is the only one I haven't heard anything about in the past couple days. The bailout will get them out for now, but if there is not a requirement for significant changes, they will be here again down the road.
Chrysler and ford shut plants down for 30 days as of today. But I don't see this as a big deal they normally shut down for 2 weeks this time of the year anyway. I don't see any of the big 3 going out of business any time soon.
Yes, the government is now in the process of partially nationalizing the American auto industry. Bailing them out to the tune of $17.4 million, with the option of becoming a shareholder. $9.4 billion of that to GM and $4 billion to Chrysler pretty much immediately. Both GM and Chrysler have reported that they will very soon not be able to pay their bills without the help. Ford has said it will be ok for the immediate future.
It's not just the domestics now. I work for Bridgestone and we make the seats for honda and toyota. and b/c they are so slow we are getting an extra two days off for x-mas to make it a full two weeks this year. and we are going to 32 hour weeks indeffinitly when we return to work on the 6th. All I know is that it almost would have been owrth it for me to take the layoff when it was offered b/c people are making almost as much as I will be on 32 hour weeks that are getting unemployment after you factor in the gas money I spend weekly to get to work.
It sucks that you wish you didn't have your job b/c you would get paid more to sit at home and collect unemployment.
