It's not just the domestics now. I work for Bridgestone and we make the seats for honda and toyota. and b/c they are so slow we are getting an extra two days off for x-mas to make it a full two weeks this year. and we are going to 32 hour weeks indeffinitly when we return to work on the 6th. All I know is that it almost would have been owrth it for me to take the layoff when it was offered b/c people are making almost as much as I will be on 32 hour weeks that are getting unemployment after you factor in the gas money I spend weekly to get to work.

It sucks that you wish you didn't have your job b/c you would get paid more to sit at home and collect unemployment.

Yeah, it's just the economy in general. People need to get their heads out of their asses and realize that if we all freak out over what we hear on the news, and stop spending money.....um....we don't make money!

Congrats to everybody, you just financed the purchase of American made vehicles with your tax money. This is a totally undeserved bailout. I hope they at least made the auto union make concessions that will make these companies viable competitors again, or we will be in the same boat in 5 years.

Exactly. There had better be some major changes. I think the first should be getting rid of the union that runs them, and maybe the uppers getting off their islands and taking a pay cut.......maybe then they can produce quality vehicles without pricing them in outer space, then taking off $12k per car to sell them at the end of each year (and obviously losing money doing so).

edit....I also think this bailout is undeserved....but was necessary, as these company's fall would be a brutal blow to our country and economy.

obama is planning on haveing eletric pwered cars :headbang2:headbang2:drool:being made during his presidentcy so in the future even foreign car companies may shut down i dont really care as long as the economy gets better

Brutal for who? The auto workers? They have been massively overpaid for years. Let the sinking ship sink

I am in a indifferent state. On one hand if the us auto makers fail then my vette becomes way more valuable over night... Thus giving me that little extra to fall back on if needed. and It should make the company I work for more pofitable b/c we make the japanese stuff and then I can go back to 40 hour weeks.

On the other hand I would like to be able to buy a new dodge pickup in the future wheI pay my current one off and if they are not around anymore I will not buy a truck from toyota or nissan. And deffinitly will NEVER buy a little honda truck.

I agree with this mostly, but the fact is - can the government stand by and let the country lose that many jobs? I mean it is crazy how many people are directly employed by the auto companies in my province.

Giving them money will just prolong it... and who wants to give tax money towards the CEO's ridiculous salary?

And the banks were bailed out too... capitalism at work?

Let's face the truth: GM will not go out of business. They will declare bankruptcy. When they do, their contract with the union should be void, and they can start fresh. That means that all the UAW jobs are in danger, and I hope every one of those people gets a 60% pay cut. GM is paying ridiculous salaries to sandwich artists that can't understand the difference between a positive and negative wire. Let it sink. GM will not dissolve, it will start fresh with it's name and a new lease on life. With this bailout, we basically give them the right to continue to operate in a manner that has seen significant failure over the years. My family has been a GM family for the last 60 years, and I can honestly say that my generation will be the last to loyally support this fiduciary misconduct. If the union doesn't make serious concessions, I'll be buying a Mazda, Toyota, Honda, or Mitsubishi the next time I buy a vehicle. I have had it with subsidizing my auto worker neighbor's ridiculously overpaid income. Do the CEO's make too much money at GM, Ford, and Chrysler? YES! And so does every person that works for them. Down with the union, let's keep a company with great tradition alive.

I say let the CEO's hang. They led the companies into this mess, yet they are still getting their money and HUGE checks at the end of the year.
All these payments the two big ones can't make are on loans granted during the a Democratic President.... so there is no need to start pointing political fingers in this mess. The President really doesn't have much to do with this. It's all poor planning/spending by both the heads of the companies and the banks.

Yeah, but like Ewurm mentioned, we should also point fingers at the union.

I'm not really a fan of unions to begin with... they may have started off with good intentions, but the end result is the accumulation of dead wood, a system that benefits seniority vs. 'right man for the job', more bureaucracy, etc.

The union bosses are in it for the employees? They want those big salaries so that the union dues can be bigger than ever. I wonder how much the union bosses get paid?
