is it as bad as haiti?

i heard it was bigger than Haiti's earthquake. but it did not do as much damage as Haiti because it didn't hit Chile where it was densely populated. that what i heard on the news.

The magnitude between Haiti and Chile is far different. 7 and 8.5 respectively. You have to take into consideration however Haiti's construction standards is mediocre so that would have cost the lives of thousands of Haitians even if Haiti would not be densely populated. In this modern world, the building structures should meet the standards strong enough to withstand frequent earthquakes. Look at Bam, Iran when earthquake struck it in 2004. The houses toppled were mostly made of bricks or mud. Naturally, the structure is very weak in itself and it is understandable the death toll would rise as a result of that.

The latest facts about the Chilean earthquake

The massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile more than a week ago moved the city of Concepción at least 10 feet (3 meters) to the west, seismological measurements indicate. :WHOA::WHOA::WHOA:

Other movements around South America caused by the earthquake include:

  • Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and across the continent from the quake's epicenter, moved about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) to the west.
  • Chile's capital, Santiago, moved about 11 inches (28 cm) to the west-southwest.
  • The cities of Valparaiso and Mendoza, Argentina, northeast of Concepción, also moved significantly.
