Chilling your fish.

A few degrees cooler is not always bad. It is a breeding trigger for many loricariids, corydoras, and SA fish to have the temp drop dramatically.

I quite often use water that is dramatically cooler, up to 10 degrees, and add it over the course of a few minutes. Never have had a problem with ich from this.

This is what I was pointing out.
bigspizz, the first part of my post was to imply that you could get a higher response if anyone could understand what the hell you were talking about.
Then gave my .02 on your skewed subject. That's all. I don't think that was off topic since you apparently agreed with it.

I don't think anyone is ganging up on you. Rather telling you their theorys. Honest I always use tap water witout conditioners. Never have ick but some species are more probable to get ick than others.

I think you started this thread with go intentions to make a point for other people to know but it got sidetracked with you wanting everyone on the same page as you. And I guess not everyone is.

We stopped talking about "chilling" then started arguing all the other stuff........Some (peoples) tap water is o.k. Mine is awefull, so is alot of other peoples (water). I don't mind a debate or being the only one who thinks something. Perhaps I could have worded my thread differently.....be on the page you want (see bold).....is that more understandable?
 
Adding tap water and water conditioner all at the same time is fine. Cooler water up to 10dF is fine, you said a few degrees will affect them, it won't with most species. My discus get room temperature water (~70dF) and live in 84dF water. Your original statement was that a few degrees could be detrimental, but if the fish are healthy, even 10 degrees should be fine. As I said, cooler water during water changes is a breeding trigger for a number of different fish.

Once again that goes against everything I have ever learned....10 degrees? no way....It gave me ick. and alot of others. T 10 degrees? that is a little much.....I REGRESS!
 
I have never heard to this practice referred to as "chilling" fish. But no I do not do this. I used to add tap water with a python straight to my tank and add dechlor every few minutes trying to match the temp the best I could. This is an ok way to do WC's but definately not the best. Now I have two 55 Gallon Rubbermaids that I fill half way up and let sit for 1-2 days which in that time no matter what I filled the tubs up with cold or hot water the water in the tubs comes to about 70 degrees. On the day of the water change I fill the remaining 50% of each tub up and bring the temp with a digital therm. to my tank temp and add the dechlor before returning it to my tank.

Thankfully today will be the last day I ever do water changes because my drip system is finally finished.:headbang2
