Chinese Hi Fin Banded Shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It wiil not survife a pond that freezes over. They still have to have air. Run an outdoor aereator on the pond and the hi fin will be fine.

I have two 18"ers in my 220 behind the couch. I'll keep getting bigger tanks for them till my marriage is threatened, then They'll go outside in the pond.

They get uglier as they age, very, very, very slowly. And since they are local here in Southern to Middle China, I think they will survive only up to temperate weather. I am not sure about freezing as they only thrive in frigid but not frozen mountain streams.

Cool fish and always stayed away due to not understanding if they will thrive in tanks at 80 degree fahrenheit all year. Plus, their feeding habits too.

I have some people that breed koi and they have these fish in the outdoor ponds all year. They do keep the water aerated so it doesn't freeze over and the ponds are 6 feet deep. One of theirs is a good 20 inches if not bigger. Later this spring I will go out the their place again and see if I can get some photos too.

Never had luck with those. They look cool while young though, tends to lose coloration as it grows.
