So all I have in my tank is a lonely brown African knife fish and I thought I would pick up some tank mates. For 8$ I picked up a catfish labeled as a Chinese upside down catfish. Catfish about 4 inches long, jet black with long white whiskers. Awesome looking catfish. Does anybody have any information on these guys? I could find very little and it seems there are two species the Asian that gets huge and the Chinese that stays smaller.

Either wyckii or wyckioides, need better photos. Will likely have to separate as it grows probably around 8-10"

I know no catfish under this name. I suspect it is made up for whatever reason.

Asian USD catfish is Mystus leucophasus.

USD catfish is most usually Synodontis eupterus.

This one is neither.

Agree with Moe that it is a Hemibagrus species, most likely H. wyckii. Read up on it, please. It is a specialty fish that will not tolerate almost no tank mates as it is growing up.

Where in Florida did you get it from - what LFS or mail order vendor?

I have been looking for one for years. About a decade ago they were everywhere for $5 at 3". Lately they have been $100+ and larger sizes.

Yeah I got it at a lfs in central fl. I went back today and he insisted on Chinese upside down catfish Haha. I'l most likely keep this guy for s month then get rid of him. Awesome appetite killed his tankmste however

Looks wyckioides. Due to whisker length and adipose. But not the greatest pics lol

Yeah sorry dirty glass and a catfish that won' stop moving
It's more of him being in the shade lol. But reason I say wyckioides over wyckii with the adipose, if you look at a wyckii it's adipose usually isn't raise much higher than it's back if at all. It's much more streamlined vs wyckioides adipose sticking out from The back like most fish. Also seems to be a red tint the the tail but can't tell much since it's small lol
