can chocolate cichlids hold there own in an aggressive community type tank. wanting to use them as dithers so to speak. looking for something less commonly used. in a tank with a grammode and a green terror. picked up 4 and hoping that the slow growth rate of the grammode will be to my advantage. any opinions welcome. seems to be a little aggressive so far. grammode is only about 2 inches maybe smaller.

Should be fine with the gt I don't no anything about gram its trial and error id give it a shot though and keep an eye one it.

They grow slow also and are very slow and docile cichlids nick named gentle giants, they will defend themselfs when threated and can be stressed easy. Not to mention they will be bigger than your green terror, i suggest useing giant danios, barbs or rainbow tetras if you want something diff for dithers

^Those are the exact types of fish i dont want.... ill try and see if it works, just was kinda wondering if any one has tried these that way, in the end the grammode will prolly win and be alone. but i have read there growth rate is sloooww. so worth a shot. still searching for that perfect aggressive community.... like that will happen.

They hate cospecifics. I had 2 large ones that hated eachother in a vicious way. I had them with a bunch of SA and CA cichlids. CAs can be a little too much for them.

My buddy kept his large chocolate with a smaller jag in a 60 and they lived happy until he broke the tank down and gave the fish to the lfs. Not saying because it worked out for him it was right but the fish were healthy and grew large, I think chocolates can hold there own dispite their reputation.

Lmao yea they are nasty from what I have read. Very uncommon though. Not sure what I like more at this point. At least they are making him "active" lol. Starting from a smaller size may increase the odds. We shall see. Will report back. I have a tank ready for separation if need be. May just get some veija syns to go with the chocolates and call it a day.

I wouldn't keep chocolates as "dithers". They are relatively peaceful and can be stressed easily. Putting them with a grammodes is only asking for the chocolates to wither away and eventually die from stress if aggression doesn't get them first.

I had a large chocolate that I kept in a 180 with multiple CA/SA's. It was picked on by anything that was equal in size, including a synspilum and a severum. I had to shuffle a bunch of fish around to get things to settle down, but the chocolate ended up with much smaller, peaceful fish.
