i dont know what u guys talking about i had 4 oscars in a 55 along with a few other fish and they was fine no problems only thing is oscars eat alot thats it...

oscars have no place in a 55g. if they have the capability of reaching 12"+ they don't belong in a tank that is only 12" wide. come on people

If by "fine" you mean stunted, stressed and barely surviving then yeah, I'm sure they were fine and then some.

Perhaps a Carpintis, they're a beautiful cichlid, can be pretty aggressive eaters, and max out slightly smaller (8-10" for males) than your standard "Cyano" texas...

That or a Cyano ("True" texas cichlid) would be my vote

If you were going to use the 55 as a grow out tank, the Chocolate cichlid, not being the attacking type of cichlid, can be one tough sob with defending themselves. If you go with a Texas, those are great cichlids with good personality, they will start defending themselves usually around 4 inches or above, depending who they're going up against.

I had mine in a grow out 55 gallon,as soon as my Oscar reached the 10 inch mark,I took him out to put in a 125 gallon.

I talked to the fish shop and they do have salvinis, they said they are between 1-2 1/2 inches. Are you able to keep more than one of these guys in the same tank?

males grow roughly 6 inches, females maybe 4 inches or so,I have a female salvini in my set up,she is still pretty small, but one tough sob.As long as they have their own places to hide,I don't see why you can't get at least 4 of them.

Do these guys prefer live plants?

Salvini are amazing :D.

If you keep more than one male/female in the same tank, only one of each sex will color up, the rest will stay very dull and normally get out of the way, this is their way of showing "respect" to the biggest, dominant fish... because of this I don't think there's a point on keeping many of the same sex in a single tank (unless you're growing out a group to get a breeding pair).

Male salvini can get up to 10", almost as big as a male JD, but normally they don't get much bigger than 8", which is still a pretty good size. Females will max out around 6". They are slow growers though so it takes years for them to reach their max size.

Sexing is relatively easy, I was able to sex mine at 1"... females have a dark spot on their dorsal fin, and brighter colors. Some people say females will also have a dark spot on their gills but this is not always the case... in fact my female doesn't have one, but both of my males do.

In regards to live plants, most people advice against it because most cichlids make a mess by digging em out or eating them. My salvini have been kept with and without them and they don't seem to mind em at all.
