anyone have any experience with these guys? I am looking to get one tom. and was pretty sure the were on the docile side, but saw a couple of websites that said they were "bruisers". Hes about 5" do you think I can trust him w/ some 3"ers?

IMO, they are very docile and leave other fish alone. My chocolate leaves other fish alone. She is kind of funny because she plays dead when she feels threaten. Here is a picture of her.

wow it's like a bubbleheaded goldfish gone WAY WRONG

mine's pretty docile too. Great fish to have in a community south american tank. i have heard that they can get more aggressive as they mature. Mine's about 4-5 inches right now.

Polomax you are sure that yours is female? dont males get that hump on their head and longer fin extensions? im new to these guys so maybe that doesnt apply to them.

Yes, that is a female. The male (RIP) was almost twice in size and it has a much bigger head than the female.

i just bought one of these today and i'm keeping it with 2 rainbow cichlids. they're pretty dosile (s/p?) from what i know. at work, we kept them with an oscar who was about an inch bigger than the smallest chocolate and they did fine, so i don't think this guy or girl will pick on my rainbows.

does anyone know much about the rainbow cichlids?
