Ok, so I've been looking at various pics of chocolates and they all seem kind of colourful whereas mine is just... brown. What gives? Is it an age/size thing? Or quality? Or something else. Don't get me wrong, I like my guy. I'm just wondering, do I expect a change? Or is it a case of 'it is what it is'? Mine is about 5" btw.

Yeah does it change colors alot (from light to dark based on mood?) Mine does, but mine is still small and a juvenile at 3in.

I think he looks pretty good. With pictures alot has to do with lighting, flash ect. Mine looks better in photographs than in person and has however colored up as he matured. That's not to discount environmental factures like water chemistry/quality, food etc. Just saying pictures can be "touched" up to make the fish look alot better than if you were to see it in person.

Keep in mind also that true Chocolates are very, very rare - and 99 % of the so-called Chocolates are actually temporalis, including these pictured ones.
I'm not sure what you mean by "colorful" - they all look like this, but can change the color shades often depending on mood, etc.

My pic was taken on my phone after feeding so waters no as clear as I'd like. But it did capture the browns of the fish as they look to the eye. I know what you both mean about lighting and mood, but looking at your pics above, shape withstanding, they could be different fish. Mine has no colour whatsoever apart from varying shades of brown. I'm not really complaining, cus I do like him (how do you sex chocolates btw?), more curious about the differences.

Mine was sold as temporalis, I thought that was chocolate? As to the colours, I'm sorry, but there is a world of difference. Bottom 2 pictures have reds/orange and greens etc. Mine is brown.

If "false" Chocolates are temporalis, what is the genus/species of "true" chocolates supposed to be?

Two fish are currently classed Hypselecara. Hypselecara Temporalis the Chocolate cichlid we are refering to and the most common in the trade and H. coryphaenoides which is rarly encountered. When we refer to the Chochlate we are refering to Hypselecara Temporalis.
