Choice for "wet pet"/ rtm vs gt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Makes sense. I tried a threesome with convicts and the females fought worse than normal. I might stick with a pair. 1 male and 3 females is a crowd in a 75 gallon?
you could do it w/ the right filtration, weekly 60-90% WCs and as long as there's nothing else in the tank. Question is, what are you gona do w/ the babies? TBH, I larger tank would be more suitable, but I will answer "Yes", I have no doubt that a 75g with a large amount of caves, hides-spaces and proper maintenance could house 1M; 3F GTs. They would LIKE a bigger tank, but if you wanna push you luck, there's a very good chance they will be ok.......but you MUST have 2-3 hide-spaces per fish....River rock can be boiled and built into caves with some time and patience. Think of it as putting together a puzzle....just collect a few hundred lbs. of rocks, sterilize them and figure out which piece fit best and where -

For example, this was a growout of mine - a 55g. growout. I would be chastised for this by most keepers, but the problems didn't even START until I started UNCROWDING them and taking fish OUT to move them to more comfortable conditions. The the hierarchy was disrupted and things went downhill (but I fixed it)

What do most people do with unwanted fry? Is there any demand for gt's?
Use them as feeders for your other fish
yes, or find a LFS interested in them.....just to get rid of them take whatever they will offer. Ma-and-Pa Pet Stores will be a much better choice than corporate.....corporate will likely refuse them even for free

A harem would work, but you must keep a real eye on the filtration and water quality with a few large cichlids in a tank that small

Agreed, I would go with filtration rated to 150 gallons or more, or 600-700 G. Per hour if not more - 800 - 1000 G/H would be better

Definitely. Two AC110 filters should work. Plenty of bio and mechanical filtration

Don't think a harem would work in that size tank both species you mentioned can get around the 12 inch mark. You could try a over stocked all male tank, but keeping the water quality is a never ending battle and you won't get much personality from the fish, they won't have any territory there for won't act territorial and that's part of behaviour we associate with being a wet pet.

I also think the tank is too small.
I like the harem approach to keeping a lot of cichlids but spare females still need to get out the way of a pairs territory.
A 75 just won't have the floor space for the cichlids mentioned.

That was my concern as well
