I agree no arowana should be kept in a tank that is less then 3 times it's body length. This is for arowana though, not sure why this comparison since body types are completely different. For large cichlid, 5-6 times the body is ideal 4 times should be the minimum. A 12" cichlid in a 36" tank is freaking cruel. If ya can't get a larger tank, then keep smaller fish :duh:
:screwy:

I have to disagree that it is cruel and I know that I have a happy fish.

I always prefer length.

How would you define the term "happy" as applied to a fish? And how would you know if your fish was "happy"?

I guess no one knows for sure, but if the fish displays his color correctly, acts normally for his species (ie digging ) doesn't hide or sit depressingly in a corner, eats very well, is hand tame......

Combine this with over fltration, 50% weekly water changes, varied high quality diet and a tank that looks pretty awesome (although I don't think fish care about a 3d background, thats just for me :) )

You tell me?

So basically, you would consider any fish that isn't severely stressed out to be "happy"? I bet you could keep a Midas in a 24x24x18" and still get those same results, but does that make it okay?

I feel like the fish is ok in it's space, and he is not even 9" yet, I am sure you have plans to upgrade the size of your tanks considering your stock? I leave that option open for myself.

No, I was ignorant and gullible when I stocked my tank, but I'm not going to pretend it is adequately sized. And if I had the ability to upgrade, I would have done so months ago.

trade both tanks for an bigger tank.

I was thinking of this but I've decided to keep 2 tanks and house the midas in the 90 and a flowerhorn in the 85.
