cichla fogo

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These Fogo(fire) are way overated,I believe. They look just like the Melaniae minous the vertical stripes. The bright red is just prespawn. Old mature Temensis get very bright red in the belly also pre spawn.

Wow.. fogo strike some interest huh? Where is para? Also in Brazil? Thankful for all the input guys

actually do a search on the MFK search function to learn more about the subject., this subject has been visited many times already.

All peacock bass are illegal to export out of Brazil, its a food fish, regulated, can be consumed and harvested, but not on the list of fish allowed to be exported. With that said, some peacock bass have been smuggled out across the boarder to Peru, Colombia, or shipped out with larger shipments.

Fogo, which is cichla marianae, not to be confused with cichla melaniae "xingu" peacock bass. Fogo, cichla marianae has never been seen in any private aquariums, claims from a member in Japan, Seiichi Hamada said he had them, but we have not seen updates of the adult fish, ever., so we will never know.

The State of Para, where "fogo" comes from, is more remote., they have fishing trips to go there, and the quickest route is 2 plane exchange after you arrive in Brazil. So the travel time is considerable., and if they're illegal to export, nobody is taking the risk, of time, money, and run in with the law down in Brazil.

There are many other rare, equally as beautiful, if not more beautiful peacock bass out in the hobby now, enjoy them, buy them, while they're here, as they may not always be around.

yes, I kind of agree with you, but at the same time, its the rarity that makes it desirable.

PARTY POOPER!!! my collection of cichla is beautiful and I enjoy keeping them just as much as I enjoy looking for new strains to add to my collection. I never said I was going to stop looking for other types of cichla. actually looking for some brokos right now, but fogo or marianae as I already knew it, is my dream cichla. once again I will say I am not looking for people to shoot me down, so If you have no positive input that benefits the topic than please just pass the thread up. the thread is simply to find out as much as I can about fogo thru MFK. I am also doing extensive research online, talking to seasoned breeders and importers in person and on the phone that my father has directed me to and I have spent countless hours in my local library educating myself on south American waterways, forests and species. my trip to find and obtain fogo will happen. it will take some time, effort, and hope. but they will swim in my aquarium before I die. Much respect and love for all cichla... peace

not at all. Many of us have talked and dealt with this subject already, and its not that we have given up or anything, its just that you should read what has been posted on the subject here already.

At the end, you can go fishing there, catch and release only. If you want to, plan to smuggle them out, well its illegal, and a pretty high risk/price to pay, that is why its not been done yet, to my knowledge. If it was any easier, I would have done it already, nothing stops me from getting a fish. I traveled to China twice, for one species, and two other times for another species in my collection of fish that I wanted, each trip roughly costing me $4000.00, flight, food, room, board, guides, drivers, expenses, at the end it was all worth it. But as for fogo, there are barriers like legal issues, distance, language, etc...

I do, and did have positive input on the subject. I've clarified that melaniae and marianae are different species, I have pointed out legal issues with your venture. I've saved you some time by pointing out the research that is already done in the past. I applaude you for your enthusiasm, I am more fanatical than anyone you'll ever meet for finding a rare fish, trust me on this.
