I have seriously fell in love with these fish. And been contemplating setting up a tank specifically for them... Now I'm looking to set up a 125 gallon tank dedicated to them, How many could I keep in there for life and which ones?

Zero? I'm sorry. :( You could probably get a set and grow them out, but you'd have to say good bye when they're about a foot long, and that's hard to do!

180 gallons minimum, and that's for like a pair, although I still have a hard time imagining a temensis not getting stunted in a tank that size. You'd really want to go closer to 300-450 gallons if you want to get impressive growth and numbers like you've seen in some of the photos on here.

awe that's pretty depressing to hear ahaha, I'd be fine with having a pair. they wouldn't last in a 125 though?

X2, I hav a 180 right now as a grow out with 5 in it, so when they get bigger I will.put them in a 300.

Just to expand a bit on the answers above, you can expect virtually all Cichla species to attain a size of 20-24". An 18" wide tank just won't cut it for the life of the fish. That being said, they are amazing fish to own- you just need to bump up the tank size if you're planning on keeping them to maturity.

So basically EVERY single person on this forum that has cichlas shouldn't have them?

WTF are u talking about bro? Almost every single person here has like a 280g and above for their big boys. they're using smaller tanks as growouts.

Your a moron. Go else where. I dont think any of us true cichla guys have anything less than a 200g. A ton have much bigger than that. When a guy says he has a 180g for a growout he means..once they hit 10-12" or so they will go into a bigger tank.

Take your little 125g and piss poor attitude somewhere else. Sounds like you need some girly fish like discus.

Very nice reply. glad to see some mature answers on this thread :) Actually I love discus. beautiful fish. And I have seen MANY threads and MOST of them don't have 2 cichlas in a 300 gallon tank... I was asking a question. Grow up kiddo.
