Cichlasoma salvini question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok keep up what your doing i just can't believe others have not jumped all over this wtf. I am done with this thread i tried to save some future torture. I am done dont bother reply to me. I said what i had to say and its over. I have kept salvini since i was a child. I know this fish is a beast. Go keep them with bettas if you like lmao IM DONE! ALSO MISC MUBNA HAS A HELL OF A LOT HIGHER CHANCE ON GETTING ALONG WITH SALVNINI IN A 120 THAN A FIREMOUTH GOOD GOD. PUT A FIREMOUTH WITH MUBANAS IN A 30 GALLONG IN DAYS THE FIREMOUTH WILL BE SHREDED.

Crazy they are related to firemouth....look much more like parachromis but I guess you can't go by looks. Idk, If I had a pair of salvini just keep them alone......they do have aggressive tendencies with the hardware to back it up. Anything you put in could be at risk, not that it might not work.

MAYBE in uk they are not th same and dont get the teeth or hyper aggression where they will fight a fish till it dies. Not all strains are the same. LIke electric blue jacks are so peaceful that ive seen. Could be diverse who knows. Just one of the worst of the worst fish i have kept and i have had midevils, jags, dovii, etc.. so take what u will im out

I doubt they are much more different just because they are in the UK or wherever, They are differences in individuals but for there to be major differences in populations that would take many generations.

I've kept single salvini with similar fish with no issue. The issue you will run into is just as cichlidfish said, if they pair up they will beat on the other fish. I've had firemouths that run aquariums too (as large as 150g). I have an aureus that pushes around HRPs and severums nearly twice her size so you can't rule out the aggression of thorichthys species. Back to the question at hand, If you do plan on having a pair of salvini or the possibility of a pair I wouldn't recommend anything other than dithers in an aquarium that size. Silver dollars and buenos aires tetras have worked in my experience with similar sized / aggressive cichlids. Good luck with whichever route you go!

I agree, salvini can be aggressive and I also would keep them alone.

Cichlidfish gave his advice based on his own experience. He is no novice and has had long term success keeping salvini and thorichthys together.
He also said that salvini get very aggressive when they pair up and if that happens that they may need separating.
You came right out and attacked this advice without provocation.
After reading about your recommendations, how many fish you have lost and about your weird continental stock mixes.I would say you are the last person that should be judging anyone and not the font of reliable knowledge you appear to believe you are.
I'm guessing the Dovii was in the 125 gallon too?
Keep flying the flag for cichlid welfare my friend and may you be an inspiration to us all.

Hey all so I received two salvinis from a buddy when I took over his tank. However I would like to move them to a 90 they are not paired up as I thought. The Female is larger compared to the male. In a 90 would two non paired salvinis work with say some lemon tetras. Or should I add 1 or two more cichlids to the 90 with the Sals I was thinking a group of Firemouths.
I believe they would eat the Lemon Tetras. IMHO I would add atleast two more cichlids, Firemouth is good, I would also go Convict and maybe a Cuban Cichlid. You could also do a school of Silver Dollars?

this is the worst advice i have ever seen i mean not a single person saw this?? a salvini or 2 will torture firemouths, the level of aggression you can't compare

for salvini you can do big jewels, cubans, super big jack demp, myan cichild, big texas, probably even red devils lol i can't believe how someone would say firemouth, i keep firemouth with molly and angel fish.

While I do agree FM are a bit on the docile side, they can hold their own. With that said if OPs Salvinis breed that could be a big problem.

no actually a fish has been tearing out the eyes and stomach of my other cichlids like killed f firemouth green terror and convict i thought it was a myan or jewel even until i caught the salvini in acation do you know if we are talking about the same fish even? salvini grow extra large teeth that other cichlids their size do not have. They have a serious advantage. ANd they are the only new world cichlid pound for pound i have seen distroy mbuna bigger than they are. I can make a video of my 150. I have had many of these fish and they are straight up killers. COnvicts are the biggest wimps sure cons attack us when they breed but salvini has the teeth to back it up. They have lake tang cichlid teeth. and i just can't believe people on here are acting like its a fish to mix with firemouth. Thats animal cruelty right there and sick. My salvini has ripped so many big fishes a new hole. On top of this the only fish i have seen take out a salvini is an aggressive red jewel. I dont know how it won but even aratus kenyi got their ass beat by a smaller sal.

Wow a bit of a stretch? Perhaps you just bought a really aggressive Salvini?
I have my Salvini with-Calico Convict, Texas Cichlid, Vieja Synspilium, Hap Compressiceps, Hap Livingstoni, Black Shark, Green Terror, Red Pike Cichlid, and a Red Oscar, Hap Venustus, and a Pseudo Crabro. While the Salvini can hold its own in my 240 gallon tank it is nowhere near as aggressive as the one you described. Point is they are aggressive but IMHO nowhere near a Red Devil or even Mayan aggression.
