Cichlid compatabilty

Not a vacation home, his permanent home now
oh well, then I stand corrected haha!!!! If I lived there I'd say screw a website too......I'm scuba-diving, then attending a bar/club that's half in the water and judging a wet T-shirt/bikini contest while deciding which company I'm going to accept millions of $$$ from for representing them.

Decisions like these require mature responsible adults who base their choice solely on the advancement of science for the good for humankind and the overall prosperity of the universe itself.

As a man of science, logic and reason I immediately insist that I be made a judge and my advice be influential and I am present for any and all bikini and/or wet T-shirt contests to make sure pure total unbiasedness and impartial decisions are made despite any outside interferences or influences.

You're going to have to get in the back of the line and wait your turn lol

I agree w/ most of this but some CA cichlids have adapted and evovolved to live w/ other sp.
For example the relationship between neets, dovii, and nics. It's been observed in the wild that neets are predators of nic fry. So often nics breed near or defend dovii fry as a defensive strategy to save their fry. This of course is impossible to mimick in the aquarium.
Juan Miguel wrote an article on t. Meeki in one fish magazine (I can't remember which), but he said in parts of the Yucatan, t. Meeki, Helleri and passoines all can be found together. But populations of each sp. fluctuates from year to year.
Also places where you find only one sp. are cenotes where they are cut off from river systems. Rivers are where you will find more cichlid diversity. Again space is important because in the wild all these sp. have a lot more space and don't come into contact w/ one another. We wouldn't have as many NA/CA cichlid sp. if cichlids never came into contact w/ one another. Hybridizing does happen in the wild which creates new sp.
Some cichlids are more likely to live in groups in the wild and some don't. A lot of thorichthys live in groups, and in contrast most parachromis do not. In the aquarium you'll have more success keeping thorichthys vs a group of parachromis.

I agree with the OP on these issues, but I think it's also important to include that it is impossible to paint cichlid personalities with a broad brush.

Having worked for two maintenance companies and three fish stores, I can say that the #1 question people will ask about a cichlid is "will this work with my fish?" They are usually referring to other cichlids. I ALWAYS tell them that I can't make any guarantees with cichlids, but I can make suggestions based on experience from myself and others. The problem is that cichlids are "smart" as far as freshwater fish go. With that intelligence has come complex social behaviors and greater variability in personalities. You always hear people are saying "oscars are so mean" and then others saying "my oscars have always been pansies". This is more common with intelligent animals. You almost never hear someone complaining about aggression or other weird behaviors with the more-brainless fishes such as tetras and danios.

So cichlids are smart enough to have individual personalities, and when comparing one cichlid against another it's not only important to note the species (and it's lifestyle in the wild, as the OP mentioned), but also the personalities of the individuals you are trying to compare. Often this requires some guess-work, and we have all made the wrong decision here before. I don't see an issue with testing two fish together for compatibility as long as the owner is responsible enough to separate them if there are issues. But of course, the available information should be reviewed before blindly testing personalities.
