Cichlid Compatibility

Despite my failures I'd still be inclined to try mixing GT's with Bala's; especially considering how much bigger the Bala's already are. I presume you are getting juvie GT's and growing them out?

Now, I also have to say that a tank full of red head Tapajos and Rotkiel Severums would be stunning. It would be pretty mellow, active, but comparatively peaceful.

You can't go wrong with either really. But if you really want GT's I'd give that a shot.

You're working with a much larger volume of water than I have and bigger dithers.

Everybody seems to have green terrors. A group of Melanura or synspilum are awesome especially in a 225. Theres no technical difference between the two but I refer to synspilum as your typical red heads with the blue bodies, the melanura I refer as the fish with more orange and blue in their bodies and are more elongated. The synspilum are more football shaped. The first pic is a melanura from the Laguna Yaxha location to show a difference.

Awesome picture. They are starting to grow on me more and more. I do like the color of the synspilum better. If I went the vieja route I think I would just do one as a showpiece and fill in with smaller native speices to where they are found.

Its always a learning process so never a failure! I just dont want to see the balas get munched since the girlfriend might try and feed me to them next lol.

I would be getting juvies to watch them grow plus easier to cohabitate with others instead of getting big mean suckers.

But as much as I like the Geos and Sevs I feel that I wouldn't be as happy in the long run since I am looking for something a little more on the aggressive side without going completly to the other side

I had balas just about outgrow my 300 - you will be fine - worst case one of your cichlids will find that they can get a free meal by picking off a scale as the balas swim by - your balas will still be fine - just not perfect looking - that is the only issue I have ever had

I think a group of altifrons and uarus would be amazing with a few severums would be amazing. I would do that right now if I already wasnt growing out gymnogeophagus balzanii and cichlasoma dimerus. That's my next project for sure.

How many did you have in there? I think they are such an unappreciated fish. Lots of personality, always know ehen i come in the room smd will come greet me and follow me around. But hopefully they dont grt to many scales

2 gates? I was going to combine it into just one gate. I am thinking about using clear tubing for some of it to negate any horizontal runs where air can get locked in but havent really figured it out in my head yet
