Cichlid Compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Breeding is not the goal at this point. Maybe after my next and final move hopefully. But I am wondering if that stocking is to much for a 71"x30"x24"?

I think if you just had 1 melanura, a large group of thorichthys and some appropriate dithers your tank would be suitable. Melanura are indeed beautiful fish but they do get rather large so I would not have a group like in the tank above.

Those melanura in the tank above look like the shiny spot variant,if you can source one of those they are stunning.

Agreed, I think he has a 300 gallon so way to many large fish for my tank. If I can source the spotted variant I will most likely go that route. I think I can mimick his stocking with everything else though in those quantities? 1 Melanura, 4 Thorichthys aureus, 2 Thorichtys meeki, 14 Astyanax mexicanus, and Xiphophorus helleri 'guentheri'.

Might lose the smaller fish since the balas will be added. But Im wonering if I can add more Thorichthys?

Sounds good.
I think you could get away with 10 thorichthys with adequate filtration and regular large water changes.
If you opt for aureaus keep the temperature at the lower end,no higher than 76 with 74 being ideal. Aureaus fair poorly in warmer water and are short lived if temps get too high.

They are that sensitive? Would the thorichthys ellioti be a little hardier? I found both of their colors to be very attractive

They are hardy enough as long as they are kept in cooler water.Th same can be said for most thorichthys except meeki and pasionis. They will do well from 74 through to 80.

good to know then. Could I do 7 Aureaus and 3 Meeki? Or should I change quantities since one might get bullied within the meeki. Still trying to learn their agression habits

From my experience you need more then 8, I had 6 helleri and suffered with aggression problems

I think your numbers will work depending on sex ratios. If you only have three meeki and end up with two males and one female,I imagine the dominant male will give the other male a hard time.
Ideally you want quite a few more females than males.
Like Dan said, if the groups are not big enough you are more likely to encounter unwanted aggression.
If it were my tank I think I would opt for 1 thorichthys species and have a group of 10.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. Looks like I will just choose one species. But heres a question, just thinking out loud here, if you were to have two types of thorichthys would they fight only amongst their individual species or as a whole? Say you had 9 helleri and 1 meeki would the meeki be left alone?
