Cichlid diets

constant question, number 1 diet for your fish should be a quality pellet. any thing else is a treat and to be fed sparingly, once or twice a week.
high protein diet well help with your fish growing faster. but it is burning a candle at both ends. It is not good for them, and will result in a big dead fish.

Off topic but what part of Texas you from? I'm from the Dallas Area and the only good store around is the fish gallery! And are the cichlid clubs any good? ( or any you know of?)
I'm barely in Texas now. But I'm in the El Paso area. And there are no good fish clubs here lol.

With the night crawlers make sure you squeeze the dirt out of them

I give my dovii live food once every 1-2 months because I'm cautious of disease but live also brings out size and color as far as I've noticed

Hey pops, only thing my gt will think about eating for the last week or so has been hikari discus bio gold which is 50% protein because he all of a sudden just stopped eating cichlid excel and cichlid bio gold. Do you think that the discus bio gold will be a bad choice in the long run? Funny thing is tho he hasn't even had it fed to him in over 4 months and all of a sudden just stopped eating the others when usually he'd devour them. Sorry for the long question just seems that you've got plenty of knowledge from all the older posts on this forum and it stressing me a bit lol, he's roughly 4 inches long

50% protein is fine for juvenile fish, especially those on the carnivorous side of the equation.

Having said that, this is the main raw ingredient used in that formula.

Not too sure how ideal that is for any fish, let alone the species that you are keeping. Long term I would look for a food that is fish based, as in fish protein of some form as the main ingredient.

Thanks for the reply mate, I think he loves it more because it sinks and is a lot softer than most. Might get myself one of the smaller sized varieties of nls that sinks and see how he goes with that. Any suggestions? Thanks again rd

NLS a good food. short term for growth higher protein food ok, 50% not that bad, but i would break him soon from it, ATM I am a aqueon fan, comes in floaters /sinkers. and dif sizes up to jumbo size. As stated by crazy you really want your protein coming from marine sources.

Thanks heaps for the replies pops much appreciated, same to Rd/crazy. Will get down to a couple of shops over the weekend and see what varieties of nls they have and if there are any other smaller sinking good quality pellets. We don't get a huge range of quality foods etc here in Adelaide, Australia, any idea why he may of gone off the hikari products? They were only the mini pellet size but they were floaters. Just seems wierd when he did love them to start with. As you can see he appears pretty healthy and growing reasonably well for a saum.
