Cichlid tank stocking ?

If you really want a "natural" looking tank, mixing Central and North American cichlids, with South Americans isn't natural.
The only place where you might find South and Central Americans mixing, is where I live in Panama. And then there is only 1 Geophagine, and 1 Andinanacara that would be found with the Central American genera such as Cryptoheros and Parachromis.
You can find Cichla in Lake Gatun, but that's because they are an introduced invasive species, like Tilapia that are also found here.
If this is not what you mean, ignore me.
Here are a few natural Mexican (Central /North American) biotopes.

I would go with a larger fish than a salvini personally if you are only going to have one pair in the 125. Anything that gets to about 12" would be fine. Istlanum would be my pick. Or you could do one larger centerpiece and some smaller cryptoheros specimens if you don't care about having a breeding pair
