Cichlid tankmates for 5 inch JD

I kinda like the idea of a severum in with a JD. If you get a severum that is as big as your jack they are easy to sex. Males have worm like markings on their faces.

That was one of my other thoughts, but if figured the a red devil or a green terror would eventually catch up to him in size and cause problems. Any tips on sexing convicts? I want to be sure to only get males.

Sexing convicts is easy, females have orange on their bellies. Sometimes it's a reddish color and other times it a yellow, but most of the time it is orange.

as I recall, with Salvinis the females should have a dark "blotch" on their dorsal fin . . . so if you want a male, get one w/o the blotch . . .

Alright, in getting the wife's opinion she wants more than just a black and white fish in the tank with the JD. She likes the FMs, so i'm wanting to see what you guys think the odds are of 3 male FMs being able to share the load of one male JD. i know they will need to be larger. Salvini is still on the table, but i'm having trouble finding them in the area. The only other option i had thought of was showing her female convicts since they do have a little more color. I know convicts would do better than firemouths, but i might have to compromise (and if they get too beat up i'll move them to a temporary tank to heal and then take them back to the LFS). Thanks for your help so far!

yeah but female cons will pair with ANYTHING so if you put females in the tank then one will pair with the JD and they will kill everything else, salvini would def be good for color but yeah they are hard to find sometimes, i think you could do fine with a GT actually, they aren't really that aggressive especially when small and i think your JD would be the boss of a GT anyways, its just that it would be a lot of bioload for a 75g so you would have to make sure to keep up on water changes but i think it would be doable personality wise, IME JDs are much more bossy than GTs

Yeh, I knew that convicts were the rabbits of the fish world, so it doesn't surprise me that it could cause problems with female convicts. One GT is an interesting route. I was originally looking for one, but could never find a male with any confidence (all were small around 2 inches long with poor coloring in the store tanks) so I gave up when i found the large male JD. I know to look for pointed fins on a GT, but that seems to be more of a suggestion and not a guarantee on them.

yeah that is just suggestion with them, my female GT had pointed fins long before my male did, the give away with my pair was that the male also had designs within his unpaired fins while the female only had to red fringing on the top, and the males body scale color will be more iridescent and they will have less blue on their gill plates than the females kind of like JDs, but yeah young GTs are really nothing to look twice at but once they gain a little size and are in your home tank their colors really come out more, but yeah you would have to separate them to allow the GT to settle in and grow a bit as they can be kind of timid when little and look very carefully in the tank at the store and if you can quarantine it as they can be kind of prone to parasites and bacterial infections (but as long as you get a healthy one then it should be fine just be sure to have veggies in its diet, which would benefit the JD as well)

I totally agree with Sarah, even if you got a female and she didn't pair up with anybody in the tank she will still spawn and become a living terror to all the rest of the tankmates. I had my female in my 75 with my GT & FM for about 2 & 1/2 months. Once she spawned the GT & the FM shared a corner of the tank and the Convict owned the rest of the tank. She constantly picked on the GT and beat the living tar out of the FM on a daily basis.
