cichlids for 130 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah i say pair festae and pair convict, because convicts are aggro as ****. They will take on everything when they breed. I think 2 breeding fish in this tank would be really dangerous though, even breeding cons will take up half the tank.

If you want cons get just cons or maybe cons and firemouths, but its a small footprint for 2 breeding pairs especially festaes and convicts.

OK, thx for all answers:)

I have now bought 5 pretty small Parachromis friedrichstalii, hoping to get a pair to keep out of those. I'm gonna get a pair of a smaller cichlid species soon (like cons or some other cryptoheros species) and atleast try to keep them together.

If you get a mating pair of Cons your other fish will probably be in for some major trouble.

You mean the friedrichstalii or other fish caught between two breeding pairs?

Not sure exactly. I've never had a breeding pair but I've heard many horror stories. I would be cautious.

what about a pair of Pikes......Maybe some Fires, Cobras or marms.......Anyway, whatever you get, enjoy and with 130 gallons, I would not be worried with having 5 to 6 fish in that tank for life as long as your up on maintenance. As far as breeders, a pair of Grammodes, Festae or anything along those lines will make that tank officially a species tank, whether you like it or not. A pair of convicts can live in that tank with other fish and althought they will be aggressive, if you have fish in there that get larger then the cons, they will be fine and snack on the babies as well.

I would just keep in mind that once they breed that tank will become the parents tank.
I had a pair of convicts in a 180 gallon and they bred. They were in there with a Green Terror, Black Belt, Texas Cichlid, Red Terror, and another Male convict. The pair of convicts kept all the other fish secluded to less then half of the tank and binched theall up in the corner. They chased and went after anyone that crossed the half way mark of that tank. In my opinion it really ruind the community of cichlids. I eventually took them out to their own tank.

My point of the story is if you have a big tank like that I wouldnt try to breed a couple different species I would try to possibly breed a larger pair like GT, JD, RD or use it for a community tank. Cause the parents are going to claim that tank.

Are cons that evil when breeding? I've bred RD/Midas, blackbelts and trimacs earlier and they took a real small territory when raising their young... Ofc non of the fish were really big, but anyways..
