  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you can use whatever in the heck you want to for cleaning a new tank pre setup, just make sure you rinse the holy bejesus out of it prior to setting it up and filling it.

^^^ What about the actual chemicals in the cleaning agent? I would be way more worried about that aspect rather than the oil aspect.

If you were worried about chemicals in any situation, wouldn't you take the normal approach and use activated carbon? :)

Nope, not on a tank that has been completely broken down for cleaning. I would use CLR for the hard crap, and the wash the entire thing in vinegar, give that a scrub and rinse rinse rinse.

Cleaning with soap is going to make that tank toxic to any specie that isnt extremely hardy. Id much rather be safe than sorry. You dont want your water chemisty out of wack from soap.
Make a paste out of baking soda and water. And spread that all over the dirty parts. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then scrub with a rag or whatever. That should take off everything except mineral deposits. They can be removed with 50% vinagar 50%water mixture. A flat razor blade will help getting anything thats really stuck on there. Rinse well.
Best natural method.

that does not always work. even straight vinegar does not do much on really old hard water stains though.

Ive never seen a water line I couldnt remove with a razor blade and vinagar. I just HAAAAAAAATE that sound. Its like teeth scratching on a chalkboard or something. It makes me cringe.

Im pretty sure CLR has gluconic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, surfactants, glycolic acid and sulfamic acid. Not to copy-pasta. but yeah. kamikaziechameleon doesn't want to reseal his tank, afaik silicon isn't immune to acid.

not to mention it'd be alot faster to just razor the 10 tanks then it would be to wash and, Rinse rinse rinse rinse
