Cliff - Albino Wels update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can relate to a high electric bill aswell...i had a couple little guys break out in ich from getting too cold...i would have thought they did better in cooler water honestly but if u think of the number of monster wels thriving in Spain (warm water) it makes sense i guess.

are you saying you had Wels come down with ICH ? Weird!

yup and in different systems both due to the cold...had a batch of 3"ers that did it first and then two larger regular ones I grew out to 12" and 14". I upgraded the 12-14"ers and took them off the heat and they broke out again immediately. my 14"er died trying to eat the 12" so I learned that the hard way not to keep any together. My current guy broke out immediately without heat aswell a couple times. I tried taking him down to 70 during the summer and he wasent happy. I've also learned they do not like aquarium salt, I think it burns their skin. Tried using salt when I first got them to cure the ick and it melted their skin. My guess is collection point possibly...if there not coming from England they may be more warm water tolerant.

Interesting observations.

I know far less than you guys on wels and mostly from theory but I always thought wels is the same everywhere, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Belarus (my home country), Ukraine, Siberia, Kazakhstan, etc. All these temperate waters, Spain or Siberia, get warm, 70-80 F, for a varying period of time in the summer and then, slowly cool until they get real cold, frozen or not quite. I am sure Ebro is quite cold in the winter, perhaps not 40 F but probably not over 50 F.

Why would you choose to cool your wels tank in the summer, instead of the winter?

Simply just tried to cut down on my electric bill with the ac running by unplugging his heater. I figured hed b warm enough without it.
