Cloning fish for aquaria trade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

Has anyone seen "The 6th Day" with Schwarzenegger?! Bring your fish to "Re-Pet" and they'll clone it for you :D

I agree with the remark that all effords should be funneled into conservation, not reproduction for the hobby...

My buddy is a fisheries managment major at Auburn University. I was talking to him about breeding Pygocentrus Piraya. Of course I told them that they have not been bred in captivity.

He said they breed fish all the time that wont breed in captivity by injecting the females with a horomone to produce the eggs. Then they take a male fish and remove the sperm. Once the eggs are fully developed they squeeze the eggs out a fertilize with the sperm.

We are hoping to "borrow" some of the horomone to try this with my Piraya. The only problem is that piranha are not sexually dimorphic and you have to kill the male to get it to work. If we could though we should end up with hundreds of fry. As most of you know piranha young grow very quickly and I believe if we can do this, selling the young would more then over the cost!

i agree. Cloning fish to be used as a food source just isn't a really viable option. The best thing to do would be making laws and enforcing them to prevent pirate fishing.

Is it possible to clone me some tartar sauce too?

i think its important we concentrate on preserving the fishes natural environment because we will never be able to clone something that amazing
but cloning is a very interesting idea, i think any reserch into it is good
JD, is that the same process as they use in SE Asia with aquarium fishes? i know they use some sort of hormones to get them to breed there.. someone was talking about getting some here in Australia

Im sure it is somthing similiar. They use it there to breed fish like hybrid channel/blue cats, hybrid bass, ect.

Does anyone know a method to sex Ps with out killing them first?

this sounds col and also it would be an important step for science and bio engineering

A couple of comments after reading this rambling thread:

1) There is no shortage of food in the world, it just doesn't get distributed to those who cannot pay for it, in other words the starving people.

2) Cloning will not save a species if you simply produce a bunch of genetically identical fish. In order for a species to maintain itself there must sufficient genetic diversity to allow individual animals to breed and produce outbred offspring.
