Close call - almost lost my fire eel

Once I let my algae get a little out of control on my tank with a peacock eel in it and my filter grew an algae...."beard" anyway I was layin in bed and just so happened to look at the tank and see my eel "climb" up the algae into the filter....but I saved him and he is still fine
 
I had a peacock that I swore up and down was gone and missing checked the filter all through the gravel (literally took out drift wood and decorations and hand sifted through all the gravel) and couldn't find him anywhere. He just showed up about 2 weeks later when I was feeding everyone so who knows.
 
Had a scare tonight. My 10" Fire Eel just disapeared, looked everywhere and had almost given up and was about go find the cat and kick him. I checked the HOB, I had glanced at it earlier but I didnt think there was room with the ceramic rings in there and I will be damned if he wasnt hiding in there.
 
Makes me nervous about my HOB.....That's the only hole in my lid that is impossible to cover up.

I use sand bags on top of my lids to keep him from pushing it up.
 
YEP LOST MY FIRE EEL THIS WAY SAVED HIM THE FIRST TIME BUT HE DONT IT AGAIN COUPLE WEEKS LATER AND DIED </3
