Me too, but both my filters went down with the power outage. I was lucky.

maybe you should change another filter to a sponge or some kind of filter thats doesnt have to be primed ( though my ac500's primes up automatically ).

I was thinking of adding an internal power filter, I have one sitting around. Not very attractive though.

My big tank has a wet/dry, fluidized bed filter, 2 powerheads and 3 ac500's...how's that for redundancy, hahaha. I've had the ac500's freeze up, which is why I primarily use them for mechanical filtration now....the others handle the bio.

main reason I like drilled tanks with overflows or canisters my 220 has large sump canniser and soon to be fbf and a fuge for nitrate controll you got lucky wurm add a small canister just to be safe

When I get a bigger tank i will, but for now it would be extreme overkill, and power outages are rare. I think the fish can survive for 12 hours without filtration. I am more worried about burning out the filter motors.

Im a big fan of redundancy in any system. I make sure i have more than one filter/heater in any size tank. This way you have a bigger chance that your precious fish will survive a mishap when one filter or heater malfunctions.

This can especially be a problem if you have a sand substrate. When you kill the power to the filter, the mag drive pump will stick and get hot. this can also happen if you get gunk or algea build up in the pump. Take it a part, clean it with some hot water and get as much gunk out of the pump housing as possible. Do this every 6 months and you shouldn't have any problems. It only takes me 10min to break down my AC110 and clean them and have them running again.

I agree, it doesn't take long to break down an AC, and it can save you some $$$.

wow man that is crazy...

I burned up one of my filters in the same way. Mine didn't restart cause the water level was to low. now I just keep my water levels high at all times and they usually kick back into gear.
