I had a close call with my wife discus tank. We usually keep the tank at 82 degrees. When I went to the tank to feed them I noticed that the water felt warmer than usuall so I checked the thermometer and it read 86. I then took out the heater to check it and it was set on 82 but was malfunctioning. I had to make a quick run to petsmart to get a new heater and am now in process of slowly working the temp back to 82. The discus seem to be fine but she lost 4 of her cardinal tetras. The heater was a visitherm stealth heater and I thought that those were pretty good.

I don't understand how you lost your cardinals at 86 degrees. I've kept cardinals before in that temp and they thrived on it.

There has been a ton of discussions lately about Marineland heaters, most specifically the Stealth model. The failure rate is significant.
I wish the Mods would have stickied the larger discussions so that other members could have a better chance of seeing the troubles others are having before we lose more fish.

Thanks, Maybe they died because the temp probably went up to fast or there was not enough oxygen in the water at that temp. Should I put a airstone or bubble wand in the tank to help with that.
Hmmm...That would have been my theory but I thought you had some water movements there. Yes, you can add a bubble wand. Or try to adjust your filters to make better water surface movements.
I don't think there is a way to elevate them a bit, is there? If not, bubble wands it is. Situate them on the sides though. Discus like their open space free of disturbance.
