My Motoro's eyes turned all cloudy over the past two days. I don't know what is wrong. I did a 50 percent water change today. No measurable nitrite or Ammonia. Nitrate lower than 5 before the water change, about 1ppm now... He ate 2 nightcrawlers this morning and it hasn't seemed to affect his appetite any. I found a shed stinger in the tank yesterday, could he have potentially stung himself on it? His tankmates are currently 2 Angelfish who completely leave him alone, and a peacock eel who is absolutely terrified of everything. Here are some pics:

Often cloudy eyes in fish can be poor water quality. Did you test before the water change? When was the previous change. What test kits did you use? Do not use dip strips and check the kits are in date.

Are you using a decent dechlorinator as I have read that chlorine can do this.

Hi bacteria in poor water can build up on or behind they eye, I fint that a uv steriliser (not clarifier) can help as longs you change the tubes regularly.

Might also want to check your PH just to be safe. Just in case you don't know you have to shake the crap out of the Nitrate test to get true results.

I know it has to be shaken hard. I do 3 50% water changes weekly on this tank. Nitrate never gets above 5. There was no measurable ammonia or nitrite before or after the water change. The test kits' expiration dates are June of next year. PH is 7.5. As for dechlorinator, I have never used it, since I have a well and it doesn't use chlorine. I also regularly run a U.V. sterilizer, so I don't think that's the problem.

More details: It looks as if only half the eye on each side is covered over by a white film (which appears to be hanging over the outside of the eyes). He seems to be getting around and eating just fine, as well as acting how he normally does.

Could it be from using a metal feeding stick. I normally use a plastic turkey baster but about 4 days ago I started using a metal feeding stick.

Not too likely the stinger has much to do with it. Stay up on your water changes and cut feedings back for now. Keep your eye on it but it will probably clear up for you.

Sounds like the water is fine. Check the well water at source as one people had some odd readings on here. I wonder if some salt may be in order?

Why are you doing so many large water changes per week? What happens if you don't and is there a temp difference? 50 % in one go is a lot if the temp, ph or hardness is different.

The eye could have been scratched in some way. Either by the sand or a angel mistaking it for something..
Add some salt, just in case and keep up with your water changes. I would also skip a day on feeding to make sure the water for the next few days stays really clean and gives the eye time to heal.
Wouldnt worry to much, doesnt look that day.

Well, I just do that many large water changes per week because it is stress relaxing. The water values don't really change, even if I wait 2 weeks before a change. The pH from the tap, as well as temp and hardness is exactly the same as the values in my tank (as well as all my other freshwater tanks for that matter).

BTW, his eyes seem to be getting better as the day goes on. I noticed he kept squeezing himself into a cave made out of rocks in the one corner, and that his eyes were rubbing the rock (which wasn't exactly the softest rock ever) so I took the rock out. Also added some salt.
