Cloudy Tank... HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know! I've tried everything. I figured with the ammount of filtration I have I wouldn't have this problem... the only thing I can think of is the little bits of beef heart cubes (which have plankton in them too) but they only get that at one or two of their meals. I've tried a bunch of really good cleanings and small water changes, and I did one large about 60% water change... and it didn't help...
My pleco likes to stick his nose in a corner and swim im place until all the substrate is on one side of the tank (annoying) but I can't get him to stop that... and he's always done it, the tanks only been cloudy for about 3 weeks

might be to much light.
cut back on the light for a few days see if it clears up.
i got a few tanks that are like that.

Thanks for the idea I'll try that... Would a different bulb maybe help?

I had this problem with one of my tanks a while back. I put in an absorbtion pack (my apologies, can't remember the name) that took out phosphates, etc. and it cleared up pretty quickly. It's kind of hard to gravel vac and undergravel. I never had a problem after I put that pack in the filter. So I'd go to you lfs and check it out. Other than that, I'd say just do your regular water changes and wait it out if all is testing well. And cut back on your feeding to 1 or 2 meals a day in the process might help also. :)

Thanks. are the packs you're talking about Carbon or sponge or something else? I have reusable filter sponge in there right now. I'm going to the lfs tomorrow anyway, so that works out perfect.

No, they're not carbon or sponge. I want to say phos-x or something similar. I've used these so far, looking on foster and smith now to find it.....

I haven't used this one yet, but it's the same concept.

There are a few on the market, and they all come in individually packed little packets filled with absorbtion media. Just read the box before you buy it.

I would say that your oscars are already to big for the 20l and the bio-load cant handle the amount of waste being produced thus cloudy water. if you had the 45 on hand or the oscars were only 1 in each i would say you have a chance...but its prob to late for that they look over 4+ each and thats to much.I personaly would take them to the lfs and trade them in for a pair of convicts.

I would say that under normal circumstances where an upgrade wasn't planned, but this is a temporary housing for them, and it really isn't as bad as I've seen before. Water changes are done frequently, and he really cares about these fish. It's almost like keeping them in a hospital tank for a while. As long as they get moved in a few months (3 or so) they should be fine.

I wouldn't feed them that much. Feed them once or twice a day and it will slow their growth down. I would get rid of the pleco poop-machine, too and that should help a lot.

What are you feeding them? Is the food messy? I would stop feeding beefheart completely as it generally helps the fish grow more quickly and can be very messy.

Basically, you don't want to stunt them, but you want them to grow as slowly as possible until they get a bigger tank, IMO.

I think your feeding too much for the fish and for the size of the tank. Try cutting WAY back on your feeding. No they wont starve, they just wont crap as much and there wont be anything left over so your filter will be able to catch up.
